It feels weird to say I’ve been in digital marketing for 12 years. It’s gone by in a blink!
I started off in e-commerce as a writer and editor in-house for what was the #2 consumer electronics company at the time. (RIP, Circuit City!) I started working with the email marketing team and OMG YOU GUYS WE CAN SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE OPENED?!
It was all over for me at that point – I was instantly hooked on A/B testing, copy, and digital marketing metrics.
I then managed to combine my love of words and metrics by learning AdWords when, in 2007, someone asked me “Hey, how do those ads on Google’s search results work?”
I didn’t know, but dangit, I was going to find out. Not only did I find out, it became my specialization. I have managed millions of dollars in paid search budgets, for names you’d know, and many you wouldn’t.
I started to blog at places like Search Engine Journal, and speak many times a year at conferences like Search Marketing Expo (SMX), Pubcon, and the Digital Summit series.
Four years ago, I stumbled into Facebook Ads – that original thrill I got in discovering a new platform was re-ignited. It let me flex my creative marketing muscles while having the comfort of metrics to reassure me when I’m doing it right. As interest and the need for expertise has skyrocketed, my specialization and speaking gigs have branched out to include paid social advertising and the sales funnels that go along with them.
Throughout my career, I have danced back and forth between agency and in-house roles, before finally realizing for sure that agency work is in my blood. I love the doing and the discovery, and being on the cutting edge of an industry that changes every day.
When I’m not geeking out over paid media, I live with my awesome husband and too-cute daughter in beautiful Richmond, VA.
